How synthetic diamonds are made
Synthetic diamonds have become increasingly popular throughout the past years. They give off a beautiful luster and an authentic look that is very similar to real diamonds. If you have always wondered how synthetic diamonds are made here a guide to the process that is used to made synthetic diamonds.
There are two basic methods that are used when it comes to the production of created diamonds. Both of these methods are what industries use to make the synthetic diamonds that you see at your favorite jewelers. There has become an increase in demand for synthetic diamonds for a number of reasons including the effects that have come from a poor economy. Both processes can make a wide variety of diamonds ranging in different colors. These synthetic diamonds can be specially designed into whatever cut or style you like, by your jeweler.
The most common technique that is used to produce synthetic diamonds is called the High Pressure High Temperature process, otherwise known as HPHT. This process attempts to recreate the process that takes place deep below in the layers of the earth. Scientists take pure carbon and places it in a controlled environment with an equal amount of very high pressure and very high heat. This process produces an item that is very similar to the natural diamonds that we have all come to love and appreciate. This process is used more commonly due to the fact that it is lower in cost.
The next process that is used to make synthetic diamonds involve something called the Chemical Vapor Deposition or CVD. This Chemical Vapor Deposition is a process that includes a specially created environment that is just right for carbon atoms to be used as a gas to go onto a wafer of a diamond in a crystalline formation by a form of layers. This Chemical Vapor Deposition or CVD process is not used as often as the High Pressure High Temperature process that is used for making synthetic diamonds. This particular method was first introduced in the 1980's and while it may not be used as often as the HPHT process in reality it is a much more simpler process as it does not require a huge amount of pressure to make the synthetic diamonds that the other process requires.
Synthetic diamonds can be made colorless but you will most likely find them in the colors of yellow or blue. Synthetic diamonds are a great alternative to natural diamonds for those who cannot afford the real thing.
