There are two different forms of weight loss, these being intentional and unintentional weight loss. Intentional weight loss is the most popular way to lose weight and is usually achieved my reducing the amount of calories that are consumed each day and doing physical exercise. The other form of weight loss, unintentional weight loss usually occurs due to illnesses, diseases and stress. If you are losing weight due to illness then you will need to speak to a medical professional or doctor first to obtain the best advice.

So lets talk more about just a few of the different ways to lose weight. Probably the most popular and most foolish way to lose weight is by crash dieting. This method is simple, a person starts an extreme calorie reduced diet plan. To the point were lots and lots of weight is quickly lost. The first week of crash dieting will look like a success with lots and lots of weight being lost on the scales. Don't let this big weight loss fool you into thinking it has been a success. Most of the weight lost will be water and lean body mass and hardly any body fat. This means that your body fat percentage will probably of gone up meaning that you are now actually fatter than when you started.

Week two on the crash diet plan, will be much different and your weight loss will slow down dramatically. This is down to your metabolism slowing down rapidly because you are consuming so little calories your bodies go's in survival mode by slowing down the metabolic rate and holding onto your body fat. If you are looking for long term weight loss results, you should stay well clear of diet plans that promote rapid weight loss.

The correct amount of weight to lose each week should be around 1 to 2 pounds. I know this doesn't sound like much, but if you were to lose 2 pounds every week for one full year, that would equal a whopping 104 pounds of weight lost. The best way to lose weight is by losing it slowing. First of all find out how many calories you need each day to maintain your current weight. Once you have got this number you will then need to subtract 500 from this number. One pound of body fat equates to 3,500 calories, so 500 x 7 ( days in the week) = 3,500 calories.

To double this weight loss to two pounds you will need to burn off another 500 calories each day through exercise. The best forms of exercise to start burning calories fast is high intensity cardio exercise and weight training. This type of exercise will really help in elevating your metabolism, which means more calories burnt even when you are not exercising. Lose weight slowly and concentrate on getting your metabolic rate moving again and you will achieve weight loss which lasts. Almost everyone who takes the crash dieting route will always regain the weight that they lose and more. So this is a form of weight loss that you should avoid like the plague.
