Thinking about adopting a child? Adopting a child can be an extremely rewarding experience. However, you have to be careful, as there are many fraudulent organizations out there looking to take your money. The adoption process can be complicated and time consuming. Having a helpful and experienced adoption agent/coordinator is a must. Here is a quick guide on how to adopt a child.

Proper Identification

Step 1

Do your research. This is probably the most important step and should not be taken lightly. There are all sorts of heart breaking stories associated with the adoption process. The best way to avoid these is to gain as much knowledge about the adoption process as possible. Talk to people that have successfully adopted children before. There are many support groups and forums available online. However, the most help normally comes from friends or family members who have adopted children in the past. Ask them questions and get as much advice as possible.

Step 2

Determine what type of child you would like to adopt. There are children of all ages and races that need homes all over the world. While most people prefer to adopt younger children, often infants, adopting an older child can be extremely rewarding as well.

Race is also a big issue. Many families are adopting children from overseas but this can often be complicated. Over the past years, adopting children from foreign countries has become more difficult as more regulations have been put into place. There are also a lot of children right here in the US in need of a good home.

Step 3

Ask yourself if you are financially prepared to adopt a new child. Children are expensive, not to mention the adoption fees which can reach $50,000.

Step 4

Select an adoption agency. Now it's best to get a referral from a close family or friend. There are a number of excellent adoption agencies out there but you always have to be careful. Any adoption agency you choose should have excellent references and accreditation.

Step 5

Complete an application for adoption. This application is probably the most thorough application you will ever fill out. You will be asked to share your family history as well as almost every detail of your life no matter how small it may be.

After your application is processed, the agency will assign someone to evaluate your lifestyle and visit your home. This period can take several months. The agent will talk to your friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers to determine if you would be a suitable parent.

Step 6

If you are approved, prepare your home for your new child. This also means being ready to handle a new child if you are a first time parent. Parenting classes are always recommended.
