How to Amend Your Old W-2 IRS Tax Form

By | Aug 26, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

The W-2 form is what an employer gives employees at the start of a new year that shows how much they earned in the previous year. It will detail an employee's personal information, show you the hourly wage and exactly how much was withheld for taxes. An employer must be the one to amend an employee's W-2 form and submit the correct forms to the IRS on schedule. If you have previously filed a W-2 but want to make change, you can do an "amendment" form. The IRS will receive this form and file it with your old W-2.

Amendments to tax forms mean that your taxes might take longer for the IRS to process. However, you want to be accurate when you are filing taxes. If this means you need to go back and make sure your numbers are correct, then it is in your best interest to do so. Filing taxes that are incorrect can cost you steep fees, penalties, fines, and unwanted audits. An audit, if you don't know, is when an IRS agent comes to your house or sends you a letter demanding to see your financial records.

Step 1

Obtain two amendment forms, which are called W-2C and W-3C. You need these forms if you have already submitted the incorrect W-2 form to the government. You will need a new W-2C form for each W-2 correction.

Step 2

Enter the tax year, employee's information and employer's information at the top of the W-2C form.

Step 3

Enter the old W-2 information in each space on the W-2C form in the columns that say "Previously Reported."

Step 4

Enter the correct information on the W-2C form where it says "Correct Information."

Step 5

Fill out a W-3C form to show each of the W-2C corrections. Sign the form if you are the employer who filled this out.

Step 6

Give your employees the corrected copies of all paperwork.

Step 7

Mail the W-2C forms and W-3C forms to:

Social Security Administration
Data Operations Center
P.O. Box 3333
Wilkes-Barre, PA 18767-3333
