How to Apply Hair Treatment for Damaged Hair

Dry damaged hair can happen from a lack of routine hydration, over-processing with chemicals from coloring or straightening, over shampooing, sun damage, wind, blow dryers and curling irons, heredity, heat from the furnace or lack of vitamins. Drink more water, add a daily multivitamin supplement and eat more fish that contains natural oils as part of daily nutritional treatment.

Dry hair also doesn't require shampooing often since most shampoos contain chemicals that dry and damage hair further. Shampoo every three days or so unless you've been standing over a grill or other reason that would create a dirty or not to nice smelling mane.

Additionally, you can add a treatment to reduce frizzy, brittle, hard to manage, dull or lifeless strands. Selecting and providing a deep conditioning can add the luster and shine you're missing in a relatively short amount of time.

Follow these tips to apply hair treatment for damaged hair to get smooth, soft, radiant and a flowing mane from the scalp to the ends.

Things You Will Need:

  • Water
  • Deep conditioning treatment
  • Towel
  • Time

Choose a deep conditioning treatment specially formulated to treat this problem that contains ingredients such as water as the base, gingko biloba, chamomile, honey, avocado, herbal extracts, soy and wheat proteins, silicon beads, vitamins and natural oils as the best option. My personal favorite is Argan Oil and you should definitely try it if you still are having trouble. You'll smell like you were on a vacation to Brazil or any of the islands.

While hair is wet, add a generous amount to the entire head. Beginning at the root, work the conditioner slowly and thoroughly starting at the scalp and throughout the entire hair shaft to the tips of the hair. This will also really help if you have split ends or lack body.

Massage the deep conditioning treatment for several minutes so that all of the scalp is fully covered with product.

After several minutes, use a wide tooth comb and gently comb through hair from the scalp to the tip of hair. Gather all hair and create a bun on top of the head.

Apply a warm (microwaved for one minute) towel wrapped as a turban around entire head. Allow this specialized treatment to stay on the covered hair for at least 30-45 minutes. The longer you leave it in, the better results you'll get.

After at least 30-45 minutes, rinse your head thoroughly with slightly warm water until all the conditioner is removed and then continue rinsing with cool water as a final rinse to close the pores of the scalp. Squeeze out the bulk of the water using gentle twists and your fingers.

Gently towel dry by dabbing only to prevent further damage, then comb thoroughly.

Finish with nourishing products such as a leave in conditioner, hydrating gel, frizz control serum or other hair control products as directed using hands and applying from the scalp to the ends of hair. Allow hair to dry naturally to eliminate further drying and damage from blow dryers or curling irons. Dry hair can normally be styled with the fingertips.

Repeat deep conditioning weekly until dry hair has received adequate nutrition and hydration, then repeat the process monthly to maintain the most soft and manageable waves.

Tips & Warnings

  • A shower cap can be used instead of warm towel to keep the heat in and to allow the deep conditioning treatment penetrate with heat.
  • Avoid the following damaging chemical ingredients:
  • Read labels for:
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
  • Ammonium Xylene Sulfonate
  • TEA Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sulfur
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Selenium Sulfide
  • Animal by-products that further damage and irritate

Don't give up. Improve your diet and apply these treatments that will help to hydrate and nourish your head and scalp. Minimize coloring treatments and processing or straightening which also cause damage.
