The Federal Pell Grant scholarship program is one of the most well-known and prestigious federally funded financial aid programs that are awarded to students who have demonstrated a high level of need for financial aid. There are no income limits and it is typically awarded to a diverse student population in thousands of American colleges and universities. So what constitutes the basic requirement to qualify for such a grant? Below are some factors that determine one's eligibility to apply for Pell Grant:

  • Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
  • Number of family members
  • Number of dependent family members attending college
  • Family assets outside of reported income levels
It is possible for you to apply for a Pell Grant online. There is no stipulated requirement for you to repay this type of college funding and the best thing is that it will help in covering a significant chunk of your college costs. While anyone can apply for the Pell Grant, not everyone will receive approval for it.

During the application process, you will have to provide personal and information for you and your family, be it your Social Security number, driver's license, most recent federal tax returns for yourself and your parents, current bank statements or any other information. You will have to apply for a PIN number if you do not already have one. This way, you can sign your FAFSA application electronically which will speed up the application process. You can use your PIN to sign the FAFSA and submit it. This will enable you to apply for federal Pell grant. There is a yearly summer deadline that you must meet when submitting the application, so you will have to check the FAFSA website for this date.

What Happens Next

Once your application to FAFSA is completed, the next step in the process of applying for Pell Grant is to wait. If FAFSA approves your Federal Pell Grant application, then they will remit the funds directly to your intended college or university. This usually happens at least twice a year and then school will credit the funds to your account.

If you do not receive immediate approval for a Federal Pell Grant, you can always request for an investigation into your situation. But this does not guarantee that you will receive the grant. The FAFSA usually awards these grants to those who demonstrate the greatest need for the funds based on their personal and family financial status.
