A reverse osmosis tank is a water filtration system that is commonly used in homes, city water applications, and well water applications. This system is highly effective in turning your water into something that’s clean and safe to drink.

Reverse Osmosis by definition, is a process of using pressure to separate a solvent from a solute via a semi-permeable membrane. In other words, imagine a mixture of sugar and water placed on one side of a filter. Here, the solvent is the water and the solute is the sugar.

Normally, when you add pressure to that mixture, both the water and the sugar will move through the filter and to the other side. That process is called osmosis. In reverse osmosis, when pressure is added to the mixture, only the water gets through. That’s because the filter used in this process is a semi-permeable membrane. This type of membrane only allows substances with small molecules to pass through. In this case, water molecules are small enough to pass through the filter, but the sugar molecules were too big to do the same.

Types of Filters

A reverse osmosis tank generally uses two types of filters; the cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane, and the thin film composite (TFC) membrane. CTA membranes are organic based; hence they are prone to bacterial accumulation. To counteract this, RO tanks with CTA membranes are usually installed in water systems that supply chlorinated water.

TFC membranes on the other hand are inorganic based; hence they are not susceptible to microbial growth. However, these types of filters are easily destroyed by chlorine so they are more commonly used for well water applications.

RO Tank Parts

If you want to assemble your own RO Tank, there are 5 parts that you have to know about. The first part is the filter array. Usually, one filter is not enough to effectively clean your water. So, when assembling your own tank, 4-6 filters may be needed.

The next part is the holding tank. The most common holding tank that you can find is the 4-gallon tank. Of course, the bigger the tank’s capacity, the bigger the space it will occupy. So you might want to consider the size of the space where you will be placing it before you buy a tank.

Next, you need a faucet, which is pretty self-explanatory. The fourth part is the Automatic shut-off valve. This valve shuts off the filtration process when it detects that the tank is full. Lastly, you will need a needle-piercing saddle and a feed water valve.

Installing the RO Tank


To install the reverse osmosis tank system, you first have to select the area where you’re going to place it. Make sure there are enough space for the tank and all the other components to fit in. Once you’ve done this, you can place the faucet and tank in place. Next, connect the feed water valve to your water line. Make sure it’s a cold water line and not a hot water line because it can damage the system.

Third, hang the filter array over a drip pan. Then, using the saddle, run the filter array’s discharge line into a drainpipe. This is needed because in filtering the water, the RO system sends certain amount of water down the drain.
