Although it can be challenging at times, there are ways you can assist a mesothelioma patient. Mesothelioma is a vicious cancer that results from exposure to asbestos.

Things You Will Need

time
patience
compassion

Step 1 Take the mesothelioma patient to their doctor appointments and to treatment sessions. The last thing they need to worry about is how they are going to get to places they need to be. They will also need emotional support. Take them to run errands or do this for them.
Step 2 Ask the doctor about, and write down, any side effects related to medications and treatments. There are two types of mesothelioma, peritoneal and pleural, and the treatment course depends on which type the mesothelioma victim has been diagnosed with.
Step 3 Ask the doctor about, and write down, any clinical trials that are going on at the time. You can also check the National Cancer Institute's website. There are certain qualifications different studies require prospective participants to meet so even if there is a study currently recruiting patients, it doesn't mean everyone will be included.
Step 4 Gather together and read any information you can find or that is suggested for you and the mesothelioma patient to read. Make a list of any questions, misunderstandings or concerns you have so they can be addressed at the next doctor visit.
Step 5 Assist the mesothelioma patient with their daily activities such as personal hygiene, dressing and eating. Fatigue is a large part of the mesothelioma patient's life. Be creative in what you make for the mesothelioma patient to eat. They will get to the point that only soft foods, soups, gelatin and broths are easily swallowed. Try to make their food choices as interesting as possible.
Step 6 Join a support group for caretakers and encourage the mesothelioma patient to do the same. This will be an overwhelming time for all involved and having others that are going through it will help a great deal.
