If you have a talent for writing and enjoy doing it, chances are, you've probably considered at least once how to become a freelance writer -- especially since you are currently reading this article. One of the biggest parts to learning how to become a freelance writer is learning how to write a query letter. A query letter is essentially you promoting your idea for an article to an editor. A query letter should include a summary and outline of your article, as well as the first paragraph. You should also include any relevant work experience you may have in freelance writing.

One of the best ways to start building your portfolio is to offer to submit an 'on spec' piece to an editor. Most good writers are great readers too. Reading and developing writing styles are both important.
