How to Become a Private Healthcare Advocate

By | Dec 3, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Private healthcare advocates help patients navigate the complex world of medical systems, including diagnosis, treatment choices, insurance, coordination of treatments and doctors, and more. This is an emerging career field. Although many people in the field are registered nurses, or physicians, private healthcare advocates can come from many walks of life. If you are interested in this new profession, here are the steps to learn more.

Things You Will Need

Strong social skills
Patience

Step 1

Find out if this career is really for you. There are free, informal online training videos from the University of Connecticut Health eCademy on topics of interest to advocates. You might also want to sign up for a workshop from Healthcare Liaison, and read about the career on their website.

Step 2

Check out a related career field. The Society of Healthcare Consumer Advocates is made up of advocates who work for and within hospitals, rather than outside as a private consultant. Cleveland State University offers a certificate program for those interested in this particular career field.

Step 3

Get educated. Healthcare Liaison offers the first credentialing program for private healthcare advocates. The one year program covers all aspects of advocacy and is capped off with a rigorous proficiency exam.

Step 4

Network. There are private healthcare advocates on LinkedIn, and National Association of Private Healthcare Advocates is being formed.
