It is actually possible to make one's basement stairs more presentable to relatives and friends who are coming over to your home for a visit. You can do this by installing a carpet runner over your flooring.

One of the advantages of doing this is that it does not only help liven up the dull look of your stairs but it also makes the steps easier and safer to step on. At the same time, the carpet reduces noise and dirt making it a wise decision to invest in the carpeting.

So what are the necessary steps on how to carpet basement stairs? It is good to know that doing the carpeting of the basement stairs is something that an ordinary person could do provided that he or she has the necessary materials to do the job.

So the first item included in the list of how to carpet basement stairs is to identify the overall measurement of the stairway area to be covered with. If necessary, you should also provide a sketch of your desired outcome.

This is done by using a tape measure or a ruler to measure the length from the nose of the tread nosing to the bottom of the riser below the thread, add at least two inches for adjustment and multiply it to the number of steps.

Afterwards, choose the most appropriate type of carpet to be fitted against the steps and make sure it is measured accordingly. Having a knee kicker, pencil, staple gun and a stair rod if preferred is all that one needs.

Start with a clean edge of the carpet material and start with either the bottom step or the top step, whichever you prefer. Stretch the fabric and secure it against the nosing of the stair tread and risers using a staple gun.

Use the knee kicker to make sure the carpet does not loosen or screw the stair rod to fasten the carpet in each step of the tread design.

However, after several trials, if all the fastening steps included in the how to carpet basement stairs list is done and the carpet still loosens up, it is best to consult an interior design professional to do the work.
