How to Choose The Right Nursing Home for Your Loved One
Choosing the right nursing home for your loved one, can be a daunting task. Knowing all the facts up front, can make the task much easier, and give you some peace of mind. Here are a few tips that can make your decision easier.
Do an internet search. Use a search engine such as Google, and search "nursing home surveys". You will be able to gain access to the latest nursing home state surveys, for each nursing home in your area. Go through the surveys, and choose a few nursing homes that have few if any patient deficiencies, and that have scored high on the survey.
Call and schedule a tour. Make sure you set aside plenty of time to do the tour and to ask any questions that you may have. If anything about the nursing homes' last survey concern you, ask what is being done to correct these deficiency. Have a list of questions to ask, and don't be shy about asking. Your loved one may become a resident there, so you need to make sure they are properly cared for. Make sure you ask about staffing at each home you visit, ask how many aides and nurses are scheduled for each shift. This can help you decide if they have enough staff to adequately care for your loved one.
Consider the cost of each nursing home that you visited. You need to find out how much it costs to keep your loved one there. Each nursing home is going to be different, thus they will have different price tags. You need to also tell the representatives at each nursing home, if your loved one has Medicare or Medicaid, this will affect the cost, and the amount of money you may have to pay out of pocket.
Make your decision based on what you have learned from your own personal research. You will now be able to make an informed decision, and choose the best nursing home for your loved one. Remember, always check in on your loved one, and make sure that they are being taken care of. If you have any concerns, talk to the Director of Nursing, or the administrator.
