How to Choose a Dog Breed for Your Family

If your planning to purchase a puppy for your family, there are many factors to consider, such as size, energy level, temperament, maintenance, life expectancy, sociability, possible medical issues and so on. You will need to research dog breed to discover which breeds would be suitable for your family's social and environmental circumstances. With so many breeds to choose from it's a difficult task. If you don't already have a basic knowledge of dog breeds, it would be best to start looking at the AKC most popular dog breeds, after all they are not the most popular dog breeds with out reason.

Things You Will Need

The top five dog breeds according to the American Kennel Club for 2008 are as follows.

No 1- Labrador retriever ; The word retriever, almost says it all. The is a high energy, large, muscular, sturdy dog with a great friendly temperament. This dog is great with kids and needs plenty of exercise. They are known for their gentleness and intelligence as they are often used as working dogs, especially guild dogs. They also have a reputation for chewing things but training can help with this.

No 2- Yorkshire Terriers; This dog is a feisty, fearless, loyal, friendly, toy breed which sometimes has a Napoleon complex. They can be aggressive to other dogs and strangers and Its important to show you are the pack leader, otherwise they can try to call the shots in your house hold. This dog is not recommended for small children as they can be very small and a little fragile. In fact many Yorkie's breeders will not sell a Yorkie's to a family with small children. They are better suited for retired or elderly people as they need little exercise and make great lap dog.

No 3-German Sheppard; These dogs are known to be one of the most intelligent breeds. They are extremely loyal and protective of their owners, to the point they may bite strangers and other dogs. For the aforementioned reasons they make the best guard dogs, and should be considered if this is a prerequisite for you choice. They need plenty of exercise and benefit greatly from games and learning tricks.

No 4-Golden Retrievers; Golden's are large athletic muscular dogs with wonderful ,friendly, personality's. They need plenty of exercise- they especially love to swim. They are recommended for family's as they are great with kids and other pets. They rarely bite people or other animals and are known to be very social and caring.

No 5- Beagle; Beagles have a nice friendly disposition and make great family pets. They have a reputation for being a little harder to train and to run away-not come when called. This is mostly due to their amazing sense of smell , which means they can become distracted. Unlike German Sheppard's they make lousy guard dogs as they will make friends with anyone who befriends them. They are social and are generally good with other pets
