How to Choose a Law School for Your Online Law Degree
People who want to enter the field of law and become an attorney have many choices available to them. Becoming a lawyer is an attractive field to many because of the potential for high earnings after graduation. Because law school is a long process, some people may want to earn their law degree online. Before choosing an online law school, however, prospective students should keep in mind a few things the American Bar Association has to say about distance learning for law degrees.
As of 2009, the American Bar Association does not provide accreditation to any online law school that provides law degrees completely through distance learning. The loophole is to find an accredited online school that provides at least some face-to-face instruction. For instance, there are online law schools that provide the bulk of education over the internet, and require students to come in only once a month, usually on a weekend. Some colleges have video lessons, which can be watched online or through a local television network.
You may want to choose an online law school that's in your state so you can visit the campus when needed.
Check accreditation for the online law school of your choice by going to the American Bar Association, as well as the Department of Education. There are, unfortunately, unscrupulous "diploma mills" that do not actually offer an accredited law education.
Contact the state board of bar examiners in your state to see if the education you will receive from the online law school you chose will be sufficient to sit for the bar exam. Your online law degree will mean nothing if you cannot sit for the bar exam in the state of your choice.
