How to Choose a Weight Loss Camp for Safe Weight Loss
Things You Will Need
Ability to travelStep 1 Research weight loss camps thoroughly and look into the history of the camp. What is the success rate on individuals while at the camp and after discharge? What do their Health Department records show and do they have any safety violations and fines against them? These are all a matter of public record and any programs are required, by law, to share them with the public. Individuals will also have their own questions that they deem important to ask as far as the history of the program is concerned, so they should be written down so as not to be distracted from finding answers to them.
Step 2 Ask if the program includes counseling and whether the counseling comes from a behavioral or whole person approach. The whole person approach seeks to treat the individual as a whole, not just the weight issue. Because psychological and overall emotional issues often coincide with weight issues, counseling is very important and the weight loss camp should provide this resource.
Step 3 Ask what exercise programs the camp has and make sure that there will be a doctor available to supervise the individual's health and the safety of any exercise program they engage in. It is absolutely imperative that the weight loss camp has a doctor on staff. No exercise program should begin without a doctor's approval.
Step 4 Inquire about diet and nutrition classes offered by the weight loss camp. These are vital to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and a good program will offer the classes to teach individuals how to make better choices and understand their own nutritional needs.
Step 5 Ask if the camp offers after care counseling and support. Weight loss is not just a temporary goal, it also entails a lifestyle change. Individuals often require further support and counseling in maintaining the new lifestyle. The families of individuals who have changed their lives also have to adjust to the changes and counseling will help with adjustments.
Step 6 Visit the facilities. If individuals who are in the program do not look happy, if the facilities appear in bad repair or the individual considering the camp does not feel comfortable there, look elsewhere. A weight loss camp is an expense that should not be taken lightly, so don't throw good money after a poor investment. The weight loss camp should have a positive "feel" to it.
