How to Choose a Yoga DVD

By Edited Dec 2, 2015 0 0

Although it's ideal to start your yoga training with an instructor, some of us want to try yoga out before going to a class, or practice yoga on our own at home in between classes or in place of professional yoga instruction. Either way, choosing a yoga DVD to work out with is an important part of practicing yoga in the privacy of your own home.

A DVD can help you to determine which type of yoga practice you enjoy best, teach you about proper breathing and form, and enhance your yoga practice on your own.

Read on to learn more about choosing a yoga DVD!

Things You Will Need

Yoga Mat

Yoga accessories depending on the type of yoga including a yoga brick or ball.

Step 1

Meditation (30384)

Take a fair assessment of your fitness level and goals, and decide how much time you can devote to a program. Do you workout every day? Are you at a beginner, intermediate or advanced level? Do you have 10 minutes a day or an hour? It's important to have an idea of what your skill and commitment levels are to know what kind of yoga DVD to buy.

Step 2

Try before you buy. If you have friends that already own a yoga DVD, or you belong to a public library, ask if you can try out their selection before you purchase that yoga DVD. The more you try, the more you know what you enjoy!

Step 3

Figure out what kind of practice you're interested in. There are many different types of yoga that has different support functions like restoration, meditation, relaxation, strength, core power, toning, instructional, prenatal and many other types. For example, if you're looking for basic, beginner yoga try: Yoga For Beginners. If you're interested in fat-burning yoga, try: Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown.

Step 4

Once you've purchased a yoga DVD or two, start a workout DVD exchange club with your friends! You can take turns trying out each of your exercise DVD collections and learn more about workouts you enjoy. Getting friends involved is a great way to stay motivated during an exercise program. You can also try doing all of the yoga workouts together to improve your form and friendships!

Step 5

Happy yoga pose!

No matter what yoga DVD, or exercise program, you select, make sure you're having fun throughout the workout. It will be much easier to stick to if you do it with a smile on your face!

Choosing the right yoga DVD is important to getting your yoga practice started, whether you're getting ready for your first yoga class or supplementing your yoga regimen. Try a few, figure out what you like best and then have fun with your yoga practice!

Tips & Warnings

Do some research on the yoga instructor on the DVD. Make sure they are a certified, reputable trainer before trusting them with your body and mind.

Always consult your doctor before beginning an exercise regimen.

The better you eat, the better you will feel and the more energy you will be able to devote to an exercise program. Eat well, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep!
