Most persons tend to settle for area rugs that are just too small for their space. The standard size or measurements for your rugs are 6'x9', 8'x10' and 9'x12'. If however, you need something larger, you can opt for customized rug which are usually not expensive, especially considering the type you want. Whatever the case, keep it at the back of your mind that you should have between 4” and 8” of bare floor space round every corner of your chosen area rug.
  • Texture: This is another tip that comes in handy when it comes to how to choose area rugs for your living room. Prior to buying your rug, you should decide the texture you want. If you need a rug that has soft feeling and adds warmth to the living room, then wool is the texture to go for. If you need rugs that are a bit rough, then you should go for those made from natural materials like jute and sisal. Silk is another material for soft rugs but it comes more expensive and easily absorbs stains and dirt.

Choose the right area rug

Patterns and colors: Have you decided on the pattern and color you want for your rug? If you are yet to do so, I will give you a little help here. If your living room comes with neutral walls and furniture, you can liven up the room by making a choice of patterned rugs so that you can bring in the colors that are lacking in the furniture and the walls. If however, you already have colorful furniture and walls, you can settle for an area rug with solid color to calm the room. If you wish to have patterned and colorful rugs in a living room that already has colorful furniture and walls, make sure you settle for one that pulls in all the colors together instead of turning your living room into a visually cluttered room. Patterns and colors should be used, just make sure they don't over power your room visually.
