How to Choose the Right Houston DWI Attorney

By | Jul 15, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Being arrested for DWI is a very serious offense, which can affect your life for years and you can even lose your license to drive because of it. It is important to hire the best attorney you can to handle your case. You need someone experienced with DWI cases, court trials and negotiations with the DA.

Attorneys are not hard to find, you can find them advertising everywhere, but finding one that specializes in DWI cases with a good record, may take a little research. First, look up attorneys, weeding out any that do not specialize in DWI. Second, check their standing in the legal and professional community by checking with the Better Business Bureau and the local bar association. Checking online to see if there is any information about the attorneys, good or bad, may be helpful also.

The phonebook is a common place to start looking for a Houston DWI lawyer as they usually tell you what they specialize in right on their ad. It can be a little confusing, though, as their inline listing is done alphabetically and their ads are placed by size, with the biggest ads first, so that has nothing to do with their qualifications. It can be a mistake to jump in and take the first one listed in a phonebook.

Checking online for Texas DWI lawyers is also an effective place to look. Like the phonebook; however, the placement of their ad has nothing to do with their qualifications. Carefully reading their ads will supply you with valuable information about them. If any of your friends or relatives have ever gone through this, you might ask them for referrals.

When you call for your appointment do not be afraid to ask relevant questions. Some attorneys do not charge for the initial consultation, so be prepared with all your information when you go. If you are guilty, admit it and listen to how he plans to handle it. If you are not guilty, ask how much experience he has had with this and what the outcome of those cases were. You need someone experienced both in court cases and negotiations.

Aside from the experience your attorney has, you must feel comfortable around him and have confidence in him. There can be a lot of different aspects of the case, such as trying to get lesser charges by attending rehabilitation, so there has to be good, open communication between you and your attorney. You need to know and thoroughly understand exactly what you are facing and how it can affect your life. He needs to get to know you well enough to advise you of your options, how he thinks it should be handled and explain what your chances are so you can try to be prepared.

A DUI can affect more than just your ability to keep driving, it can affect your personal life as well as your job in some cases. It will cost you a lot of time and money to fight this, but it will cost you more in the long run if you do not. A DWI on your driving record will increase the cost of your car insurance and you may lose your right to drive.
