How to Clean Carpets

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 1 0

Step by Step Guide

This article is designed to give you a step by step guide for cleaning your carpets.  Just on a side-note this is not an article on steam cleaning, but standard vacuum cleaning.  The first thing that a guest is going to notice when you welcome them to your home is the carpet.  This may seem surprising, but the eyes naturally gravitate towards the flooring.  So this is why it is very important to make sure your carpet is crystal clean for a big party or get together.  Furthermore, it is important that you clean your carpet correctly or you could risk permanent damage to your home.

Unfortunately for you, carpets can get dirty from time to time.  Like tile, carpets line the house and small children can track in dirt.  Unlike tile, dirt being tracked in the house on carpet can lead to permanent damage.  Tile is relatively easy to clean with certain products like Aqua Mix.[1] Carpets can be tricky, but this guide will show you how to clean your carpets safely and effectively.  So let's get started!

Step One

The first step that you need to accomplish is moving your furniture.  When you want to professionally clean your carpet that means taking extra steps to protect your property and to make sure that you reach all of the carpet in a given space.  Now, most people will skip this step because it requires hard labor to move some furniture.

It is important that you do not skip this step.  By reading this article you are agreeing to the premise that you want to make sure your carpet is cleaned properly.  So, the first thing you need to do is move your furniture out of the room that you want to clean.

Step Two

After you move your furniture out of the way then you can begin the second step.  The second step requires you own or purchase a high-powered, professional, vacuum cleaner.  Make sure that your cleaner is effective and not worn out or dull.  You want to make sure that it still can clean carpet correctly.

Just buy your own professional vacuum cleaner and once you learn how to clean right then there is no reason to ever have to spend copious amounts of money on professionals to clean for you again.  Unless you fail to vacuum on a regular basis and then you might have to hire a professional steam cleaner to clean your house for you.  Note you should only have to do this if you have not vacuumed on a regular basis.

The vacuum cleaner that I am recommending that you purchase is a Royal Lightweight Commercial Vacuum (pictured above).  This is a commercially used and professional vacuum cleaner with good reviews.  Check it out here.[2]

Now that you have (hopefully) purchased your own vacuum cleaner then you are ready to begin step two and it is a straight forward step.  By now you have already cleared out your carpeted room and removed the furniture.  This will allow you to clean the room with your vacuum cleaner.  There will be no objects in the room to obstruct your cleaning.  I recommend that you clean the room in the following fashion.

  • A quick 10 minute sweep of the room
  • A follow up extended sweep of the room
  • A final sweep if needed

You are going to want to make sure that your carpet has been thoroughly cleaned with the vacuum cleaner.  This means that you need to sweep the room several times.  A quick sweep will allow you to get up the loose particles of dirt on the surface on the carpet.  A longer, follow-up, sweep will allow you to get the parts of the carpet that are tough to get out.  Finally, a final sweep, can get anything that you might have missed.  If you did the first two steps correctly however, this final sweep will not be needed.

Step Three

The final step is a tricky one because there are several things that you need to do.  Unfortunately, straight-forward, vacuum cleaning with a good model like the Royal is not always enough.  There might still be stains or residue in the carpet that just can't be removed with an average vacuum cleaner, no-matter how powerful.  At this point you need to evaluate the carpet and see if you need to take it to the next level and higher a steam cleaner.

If you are satisfied with your own cleaning then there is no reason for steam cleaning and you can move on to step four.

Step Five

After you have evaulated your carpet and are satisfied with your work than you need to move your furniture back into the room and move on to the next room.  The purpose of moving your furniture out in the first place was so you could access the entire room with no obstructions.  After you have vacuumed you can bring the furniture back in to (hopefully) clean carpet floors.

Vacuuming requires effort and your carpets can easily be spoiled by pets and smal children.  That is why it is important to vacuum often (at least once a week).  You need to make sure that you clean up any dirt being tracked into the house by small children and pets.  If you do not vacuum often then residue will seep into the floor and it will be impossible for you to get it out with a traditional vacuum cleaner even if it is a great model like the Royal.  So, in this situation you will need to consult and hire a professional steam cleaner.  Or learn how to steam clean yourself.

I hope this helped and please make sure that you continue to vacuum often and effectively. Please make sure you pick the right vacuum as well because it is pointless for you to even vacuum your carpet unless you have a good model.  Poor models can be frustrating and hard to use.  A good model like the Royal Lightweight Commercial Vacuum will make you life easier and put a smile on your face when you use it.

Additionally, always remember that carpet cleaning is important but so is your sanity so if you feel like you need to condense the steps I have outlined above and do something else please feel free to do that.  I want you to have the best carpets possible and to use the best products possible.

I hope this helped and please let me know in the comments below how it turned out.
