How to Clean a Leather Sofa

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Having leather sofa is a great thing when it comes to furnishing a living room because they can be an elegant and stylish addition to your living area furniture. And aside from being a good aesthetic element of any home interior design, they are also well known for their functionality and the superb comfort they provide their users.

Having leather sofa set furniture, however, is not as simple as it sounds because it entails some responsibility. If you wish to make your leather sofa last a long time, you will need to clean it regularly and make sure that it receives at least the minimum care that it needs to stay beautiful and functional for as long as possible.

To clean a leather sofa, you will need a dusting cloth (one with electrostatic properties is a good idea as it picks up the dust and actually keeps the dust), a water basin (or a bucket), some leather soap (some recommends Ivory soap or any other gentle cleaner soap), a sponge, some leather conditioner, a vacuum cleaner, a soft buffing cloth and space where you can work in (Note: if you have carpets be sure to lay down some protective covering on them to protect them from the leather conditioning chemicals).

To start the cleaning process, you will need to clean off the dust and loose dirt that is on the sofa using a dusting cloth. If the sofa cushion can be removed, you should do so and put them on an area that you allocated for it prior to working. This is where those carpet covering may come in handy because you can just lay all the cushions on the floor. You can them vacuum the interior parts of the sofa.

Next, you soap the leather surfaces using warm water and cleaning soap solution. Get the sponge and dip it into the solution and wring it till it is in a damp-dry condition. Then gently wipe the sofa surfaces using the sponge. A steady and firm wiping motion should be adequate to remove the dirt, grease and grime combination that has accumulated through time. No need to "scrub" it harshly.

After wiping the entire sofa with soap, wring out the soap from the sponge using clean, running water and replace the soap solution with clean, warm water administered with appropriate amounts of leather conditioner. Dip the sponge in this solution and wring it out till damp and dry. Wipe the entire sofa anew with the sponge using a circular rubbing motion. After doing the entire sofa and making sure that it is coated with the conditioning solution, leave it for about 30 minutes.

Take the buffing cloth and use it to rub the sofa surface till you achieve that shine that leather sofa fabrics are known for.

Keep those slick and elegant leather sofas (weather they are brown, red, or black leather sofas), you can keep them looking like the day you bought them by maintaining them properly and making sure that they are properly used and cared for.
