How to Clean and Maintain a Large Pond

Although a large pond is a beautiful addition to any piece of land, cleaning your pond is a necessary step in order to remove the build up of toxins and other bad bacteria. In addition to removing the visible debris from the surface of the pond, there are additional steps that need to be taken in order to obtain and maintain a clean pond that is larger than average. These steps ensure that you are taking the necessary path towards a clean large pond.

Things You Will Need

Floating fountain
Lake bed aerator
Natural bacteria
Pond dye
Floating islands

Step 1

Aerate the pond by adding a floating fountain or a waterfall. Although these provide some aeration, to obtain the best aeration, install a lake bed aerator. This device is installed on the edge of the large pond and work to push air to the bottom of the lake to diffusers. By aerating the lake bed, you are eliminates thermocline due to the elimination of stratification, which is when the bottom layer of the pond is not disturbed. When stratification occurs, there is a thermocline which separates the bottom layer from the top layer of the pond. When the thermocline is broken, it releases toxins in the pond.

Step 2

Add natural bacteria to the pond. You can find this type of bacteria in your local retailer for pond supplies. This bacteria is beneficial because is reduces aquatic weeds and algae by reducing the amount of nutrients in the water. It also breaks down sludge and muck and reduces the odor that emit from the pond.

Step 3

Add pond dye to the water. This dye comes in either blue or black and helps maintain the clean water in the pond by limiting the amount of sunlight that is let through into the water; this, in turn, reduces the amount of aquatic weeds and algae that grows.

Step 4

Remove nutrients and heavy metals from the large pond by a process called phytofiltration. This process uses natural plants that are placed in floating islands. The floating islands are designed to promote easier growth control and they use more nutrients from the water than plants do that are planted in the soil.
