If you need to contact a credit reporting agency, such as Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax, you can do it online quickly and easily. Remember, that under the Federal Credit Reporting Act a credit reporting agency can not update your records unless the information is inaccurate or an investigation is done and the creditor fails to respond. Creditors, not credit reporting agencies, are responsible for correcting the information.

Things You Will Need

The internet

Step 1 You can go to Experian website, or follow this link to dispute an item on your Experian credit report. For fraud reporting, or prevention see Experian Fraud.
Step 2 You can go to Equifax website, or follow this link to dispute an item on your Equifax credit report. For fraud reporting, or prevention see Equifax Fraud.
Step 3 You can go to TransUnion website, or follow this link to dispute an item on your TransUnion credit report. For fraud reporting, or prevention see TransUnion Fraud.

You can also get a free copy of your credit report annually from all three agencies by going to AnnualCreditReport.com. Annual Credit Report is the only official free credit report website sponsored by the credit reporting agencies. It is important to remember that after you've entered your contact information, advertisements will pop up. Click "NO" to anything requiring payment. Eventually, you will see your credit score FREE.

Tips & Warnings

* After you have contacted your creditor to resolve a dispute, follow-up by contacting each credit reporting agency. Provide them with a copy of the communication you had with the creditor. Let them know there is a dispute and the creditor is obligated to respond to the reporting agency with updated information. This will ensure your credit report is updated within a reasonable amount of time. If the creditor fails to respond, the credit agencies will remove the disputed transaction from your report.
