There seems to be a common misconception that it's not possible to cook eggs in stainless steel without having to deal with serious sticking problems. The truth is... it is possible. Non-stick pans are not necessary to achieve non-stick results. Stainless steel can be used to cook eggs that actually slide right out of the pan. If you know the correct way to use stainless steel, then you can cook eggs that won't stick every time!

Follow the steps below to prevent 'sticking problems' the next time you cook eggs in your stainless steel pan. Fortunately, if you are successful, there won't be any intense scrubbing going on during clean up time.

Note: The chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), present in coatings of non-stick pans, was found to be a 'likely carcinogen' by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2005. For this reason it may be a good idea to replace your non-stick pan with a healthier alternative like stainless steel.


  • Stainless steel fry pan or stainless steel french skillet

Place stainless steel pan on burner and turn stove on low to medium. Heat smaller pans on low and larger pans on medium. Make sure pan is completely dry.

Step 2

Preheat pan for 3-4 minutes on a gas stove and 4-5 minutes on an electric stove. Preheat large pans for 5-6 minutes. Preheating the pan is very important.

Add oil to pan. Use as much or as little oil as you desire. Make sure it completely covers the bottom of the pan.

Pour scrambled eggs or crack each egg directly into pan right away. They should sizzle when they hit the pan.

For scrambled eggs, wait 1-2 minutes and gently stir. Wait another minute and stir again. Repeat process until cooked. For sunny side up eggs, cook for 1-2 minutes or until done to your liking.

Remove scrambled eggs with wooden spoon or sunny side up eggs with spatula from stainless steel pan or remove pan from burner to prevent eggs from burning. Enjoy!


Mastering the process of cooking eggs in stainless steel can be tricky.
