How to Create a Harry Potter Costume for Halloween or Movie Premiers

By | Oct 5, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Whether you are creating a Harry Potter costume for Halloween or dressing up for one of the Harry Potter movie premiers, it's important to make the outfit as authentic as possible. While you can purchase a complete Harry Potter costume, or the individual pieces at many costume stores, you can also make your own costume for much less. Many items you need are inexpensive and may already be in your own closet. So for those who want to look like the famous boy wizard, here is how to create an authentic Harry Potter costume.

Things You Will Need

White collared shirt
Grey sweater vest
Black Robe
Grey or black pants
Red and gold stripped tie or scarf
Horn rimmed glasses
Black face paint
Wand
Broom

Step 1

Put on a white collared dress shirt topped with a grey sweater vest. If you don't already own these, buy them from a thrift store for a few dollars a piece. Slip a black choir robe on top of them leaving it open or zipping it up as desired. You can black robes at religious stores, or borrow one from church. You can also get a black grim reaper cape, which also has a hood that looks even more authentic.

Step 2

For pants, go with a grey color that matches the sweater vest as closely as possible. But if you don't have grey pants, you can just as easily substitute black ones.

Step 3

Finish the Harry Potter clothing look by putting on a Gryffindor colored red-and-gold striped tie. If you want to skip the tie, you can also put a long red and gold striped scarf around your neck which the students of Gryffindor wear during winter.

Step 4

Find some black horn rimmed glasses. These are a must have part of the Harry Potter costume, since they are one of the most distinguishable physical characteristic of Harry Potter. You can find black framed glasses at the dollar store and pop out the lenses for a cheap look, or go to any Halloween store. If you are lucky and have a friend with an extra pair of glasses, ask to borrow theirs for the night.

Step 5

Draw the famous Harry Potter lightning bolt scar on your forehead using black face paint or a black eyeliner. Although Harry's scar wasn't really black, most people choose to play up the feature by darkening it when they dress up in a Harry Potter costume.

Step 6

Get a wand that is made of wood. If you are going to spend money on any part of the costume, spend it on getting a wand. If you don't want to spend the money look for a toy wand that is wooden or looks like wood.

Step 7

Carry a broom. A broom is also a must considering that Harry Potter plays Quidditch so much. While you're at it, get a small tennis or racquet ball and paint it gold. For those of you who don't know what this is, it's the "golden snitch".

Step 8

Get some friends. No one likes to dress up alone, and this is one time where you definitely need some sidekicks. Ideally, you need at least one girl to dress like Hermione and one boy to dress like Ron.
