A way to prevent stomach acids from bypassing the sphincter is to eat properly. Avoid foods that are fatty, oily, spicy and acidic. Be careful when drinking alcohol, tea, soda, coffee or other caffeinated drinks, because they can also cause heartburn. Avoiding these foods is a common way to cure your heartburn.

If you are experiencing severe pain from heartburn, then it is advisable to go see a doctor. Most doctors will prescribe antacid related medication to cure heartburn. Antacids are commonly recommended for mild cases of heartburn. Antacids are a great way to cure your heartburn and usually offers relief in only 20 to 30 minutes. Another medication commonly used for heartburn is the H2 receptor antagonist. The H2 receptor reduces the amount of acids in your stomach. Using a proton pump inhibitor is also a good solution to cure your heartburn. The proton inhibitor reduces acid production to prevent heartburn.
