How to Cut a Cantaloupe

By | Oct 29, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Enjoying this delicious fruit can be much more difficult if you don't know how to cut it properly. Apart from using the knife safely, cutting odd shaped pieces can be less appealing, and not store as well. Whatever your reason for eating this delicious fruit, this article will tell you how to cut your cantaloupe.

The first thing to need to do is find an appropriate knife. I have found that the easiest knife to use is a serrated knife—similar to the knife you might use to cut your bread. Longer knives are also easier to work with, and will help you keep your hands clean.

Begin by cutting the cantaloupe in half. Hold it still with your non dominant hand, and cut with your dominant hand. Always make sure to cut away from yourself, never cut towards your body.

Now you are ready to separate the fruit from its outer shell (or peel). Take the knife and begin at the outside edge. Insert the knife where the fruit begins to turn green and slowly work your way around the fruit. This might take a little bit of maneuvering with your hands.

Once you have separated the bulk of the fruit from its outside covering, you can chop it into smaller pieces. Cut the fruit horizontally into thin slices, and then the opposite direction to make little slices of cantaloupe that are perfect—for eating with your hands, or placing on a skewer!
