Most people who need to realign their teeth, whether for cosmetic or dental health reasons, cringe at the thought of braces. Especially for people over the age of eighteen, braces can seem unsightly and juvenile. However, a product called Invisalign changed the game in 2006 by giving people the option for clear, removable braces. Invisalign is a clear plastic mold that works the same way as traditional metal braces do. For the most part, there are many advantages to Invisalign, but they are not for everyone. If you are considering getting your teeth straightened, you’ll need to decide between Invisalign and standard braces, and there are a few things you should consider before making your final choice.

Advantages of Invisalign

For the most part, Invisalign braces are superior to standard ones. With standard braces, you will get food and plaque stuck between the metal braces and your teeth, which makes oral hygiene difficult. Hygiene is easy with Invisalign, as you simply take the plastic aligner off, before eating and then brushing your teeth. Similarly, there are no diet restrictions with Invisalign, as there are with traditional braces.

There is also the obvious cosmetic advantage of Invisalign. The plastic is clear, so people won’t even be able to tell that you’re wearing braces. You can also remove them for photo shoots and big events, so you won’t have to worry about forever ruining your prom or wedding pictures with braces.

Invisalign braces are also safer than standard ones, and you’ll make fewer emergency trips to the dentist. With standard braces, especially for people who play high-impact sports, metal parts can come off or injure the mouth of the person wearing them.

Advantages of Standard Braces

There are definitely a few major advantages to standard braces. If your dental realignment is for more than simply cosmetic needs, standard braces are a better choice. Invisalign cannot shift certain teeth, such as molars.

With Invisalign, you run the risk of forgetting to put them back in, or losing the aligner altogether. At least with standard braces, you can’t take them off and just forget about them.

While the price of Invisalign has dropped significantly, as its popularity has increased, it is usually still slightly more expensive than standard metal braces. It does depend on the dentist, though, as many Mission Viejo dentist offices, Orange County dentist offices, Newport Beach dentist offices, and Irvine dentist offices offer Invisalign at the same price as metal braces. In some cases, both types can be covered by dental insurance

In the long run, your decision about braces should be guided by a consultation with your orthodontist. However, if your dental needs are suited for either option, you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of both types of braces and how they’ll fit into your lifestyle. When it comes to either treatment time or results, both options are virtually the same.
