How to Decorate Wreaths and Photo Frames with Seashells crafts

Collecting seashells to make crafts

Holidays are a great time to spend collecting seashells on the beach and enjoying the fresh air. Better still you may lose weight while walking in the sunshine.

The photo frame and shells in the picture above has been painted white as I wanted to try something different other than leaving the shells natural.  Here are a few ideas on how to decorate wreaths and photo frames with seashells so you can give them to your friends for gifts.

How to make Seashell Photo Frames

You can decorate photo frames easily with seashells of different varieties by gluing a mixture of small and larger shells.

Things you will need:

  • Seashells
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Wood Photo frame (choose one with a flat surface)
  • Clear Varnish or Paint depending on the finish you choose
  • Coloured Glitter

Instructions

Remove glass and backing from photo frame.
If you chose a polished frame then sand it slightly to make it rougher.
Lay out your some small and larger shells that will fit onto your frame without overhanging the frame.

If your frame is wider one way than the other you will need to decide which way you want the frame to sit before adding the seashells.

In the picture above I used a polished frame and then sprayed with clear gloss varnish.

Lay your frame on some old newspaper so you won’t damage the table surface. Do a dry run by placing the larger ones onto the frame until you are satisfied with the appearance. You could choose larger ones to cover the corners. Try not to use big bulky shells as these could be easily knocked off or hard stay on.

Preheat the glue gun.

When you are satisfied with your selection, start from one corner and glue each shell in place. Be careful not to burn yourself as the glue will be hot.

Now fill in the spaces by fixing on some smaller shells. Leave the frame to dry.

Sprinkle on some glitter, then spray with a clear gloss. Now be patient and leave the frame to dry thoroughly before fitting the glass and photos. You will not want the clear varnish to stick to your photo and glass.

Other variation: You can paint everything white. When finished add glitter if wanted then finish off by spraying with clear gloss.

How to make a Seashell Wreath

Things you will need:

  • Different sized seashells
  • Foam wreath
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Ribbon
  • Small piece of wire
  • Coloured glitter
  • Clear gloss varnish

Instructions

Bend a piece of wire in half. Hold the loop at the top back and fold the ends down the back and up over the front and over the loop at the back. Tighten this so it is firm because this loop will be used to hang the wreath.

Wind the ribbon through the centre of wreath and around again. Glue the end so it cannot move. Continue to wrap ribbon around until completely covered. This will make it easier to glue the seashells onto.

Preheat the glue gun. Sort your shells out into small, medium and larger shells depending on size of the wreath. Do not use very large ones as they will be too bulky.

Use caution when using the glue gun as the glue is hot and will burn your fingers. Glue shells by fixing some larger shells then filling in the spaces with the medium and smaller ones until you have the inside, top and outside covered with shells.

Be careful not to have shells protruding out too far. Also make sure the back of the wreath will still lay flat so that it will hang on the wall or use as a centre piece on the dinner table

Decorate the wreath by sprinkling with coloured glitter then spray the whole wreath with clear varnish. Leave the wreath to dry thoroughly before moving.

Christmas Table centre piece

If you want this for a centre piece then drape a piece of Christmas decoration around the edge.

If using for a wall decoration you could also add a photo to the back.

There are so many other different things you can make with seashells. Let your imagination free and design something for yourself.

I have so many old seashells kept as souvenirs from vacations, I don't really know what to do with them except keep them in a souvenir ashtray. Maybe I should give them to someone who likes crafts.

thanks KCAllen Why don't you make something like I did or stack them in a clear glass jar and make a lampshade out of it. I am sure you could find something to make with them it is not hard to do. Just practice. If you dont like it give it away.... good luck
