How to Decorate with a Red Sofa

By Edited Jun 27, 2014 0 0

A red sofa is a very bold statement. The one disadvantage to this is that it will easily become dated. This is why it's really important to find red sofas that are going to work for you for a very long time and fit in with the rest of the furniture that you already have in the space. You can also really save a ton of money because this is the perfect piece to buy if you're just starting out. This might not be the couch that you own for the next 10 years. Instead, find something that makes a statement now and you can get it on a budget.

A great way to do this is just with a sofa sleeper. This is really just an upgraded futon. It can be in an easy to clean microfiber fabric. Look for futons without heavy wood frames. This is going to take it into more of a contemporary kind of design aesthetic.

Materials and Patterns

Red Sofas

One way that you can really tone down a red sofa is to go with a pattern. Usually this would be frowned upon because it would be a little bit too bold. Instead you want to go with a tone on tone print. This could even have kind of the look of an embossed velvet. It could feature very modern types of swirls. The leaves are going to really going to relate back to nature.

You can also make this a little bit more neutral just by the fabric that you choose. Really a burgundy or cordovan kind of leather is a staple in design. You might not instantly think of it as red. It does have a lot of brown to it. Also, if you look at a lot of rustic sofas with distressed leather there will be a little bit of red to it. This is a way that you can coordinate your furniture with brighter colors of accessories while still getting neutral kinds of pieces that are going to last for a very long time. These are some of the more expensive furniture pieces that you can buy but the durability can really be worth it.

Red Sofas

Red Couches

The bring trend now is neutral sofas and brighter fabrics on your accent chairs but you can still work with a red couch. You can also do the reverse and try out seagrass wingback chairs for more of a neutral and an updated look. Try burlap throw pillows to tone down the bright sofa color. If things aren't still fitting together then you can also put a red throw pillow on the chair and your couch may already have an extra one.

This also works extremely well in the country kind of design style. It's a way to make a big impact in your room. You can match any brick red pieces or faux finishes that you might have going on in the space. In this case you want to go with a rolled arm. It should also be quite overstuffed. Just stick with a basic canvas fabric. You could even accent it with fun denim throw pillows.

Red Couches

Your wall color is going to be one of the most important elements of your space. If you want a modern look then go with a white wall and then the red couch is really going to stand out. If you want it to look rustic then you can just go with a brown wall but you'll need to use a richer color of red. Contemporary styles use a lot of gray and this is really going to provide a lot of contrast against the brighter color. It's going to be a color palette that's soothing and shocking at the same time. You will need to find one item such as a taupe pillow or even a stainless steel lamp with a red shade that combines both of these colors together just because it is so unusual.
