How to Decorate your Backyard for the Summer

Summer is just around the corner and I am sure everyone is just as excited as me. If you do not know already, Vancouver British Columbia is known as a very rainy city. We definitely do not get enough of the sunny days; therefore most Vancouverites will take advantage and savor every moment that they have while it is warm and dry out. What is better than having a barbeque with family or a nice dinner and drinks with a small group of friends in your backyard? The appearance of your back yard can go a long way in setting the ambience (along with great company of course!).

Here are some ideas and tips to transform your backyard into a warm, cozy place to enjoy this Summer!

1.   Lighting

Add some outdoor lighting to your backyard. You can put up light strands around your yard fence or around trees. A suggestion is to use your Christmas lights – take it down from the house and put it up in your backyard.  If you do not want to deal with the headache of extension cords, wires and power outlets, you can opt for solar powered lights, which are much more energy efficient.

 2.   Furniture & Accessories

Add patio sets, lounge chairs and etc. to your backyard. If you are going to have people over for food and drinks, they will need a place to sit and relax. You do not need to spend a fortune on your patio set. You can buy even the most basic items and decorate them with colorful cushions. An outdoor lounge sofa, table and a heat lamp would be some of my favorite picks.

 3.   Garden/Landscaping

Plants, trees, bushes and flowers will liven up your backyard. It is refreshing and beautiful. You can also add garden statues, stepping stones or a water feature, such as a pond to complement your garden.

 4.   Barbeque Grill

Barbeques in the Summer is a fan favorite; therefore having a barbeque grill is a must! It brings cooking outdoors where you can enjoy the sun while you grill and chat up with your guests. The best part is the food that you normally do not get year round at home – mouth-watering burgers, steaks, chicken wings, salmon and much, much more!

 5.   Outdoor Firepit and Fire Place

Add a fire pit or fire place to your backyard. Installation of a fire place can be very expensive; however a fire pit is a good alternative. It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors at night either with a group of friends or with your significant other.  Make sure you check the regulations in your municipality before you install the fire pit or fire place.
