How to Diet the Right Way

By Edited Sep 30, 2015 1 2

There are right ways and wrong ways to diet. Anyone can do it the wrong way by taking any number of diet pills on the market today. I wouldn't advise it. To many things can go wrong with theses diet pills. We have all seen some of the devestating problems with these lose weight fast deals. Fen Phen is a perfect example of what can go wrong. Some of the more serious problems with Fen Phen are heart valve injuries and pulmonary hypertension. Many former users are now having to deal with heart valve surgerys costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The makers of Fen Phen are still dealing with lawsuits that have been going on for over a decade. There is a right way to lose weight.

Things You Will Need

A good pair of shoes for walking. Some small weights if you choose to do weight training. A resistance band and an exercise ball. All of these exercise equipment devices are very inexpensive and easy to understand and use. A scale to weigh yourself and a journal to record what you are eating on a daily basis. A lot of people don't realize how much they are really eating until they see it in writing. If you bite it, write it.

Step 1

The first thing you have to do is find out how many calories you should eat in a day for you to effectively lose weight. There are 3 things that can help you do this. The first thing to find out is your Body Mass Index. Your BMI is a measurment using a scientific formula using your height and weight to find out your healthiest weight. If you are below 20 then you are slender and lean. A number between 20 and 25 is the ideal BMI. If you are from 26 to 30 you are overweight. 31 to 40 means you are very overweight and over 40 means you are morbidly obesse. The next thing you need to know is your Resting Metabolic Rate. This is how many calories you burn when sitting and doing nothing for a 24 hour period. If you take this number and subtract around 500 calories a day you will lose a pound a week. You should also find out how much lean protein you should eat in a day, using a Lean Protein Estimator. You can find all these tools on google search.

Step 2

Calorie intake is important to good dieting because if you don't consume calories your can't burn calories. To burn calories your metabolism must burn hot. If there is no food in you, your metabolism is slow and sluggish. You should idealy eat 5 small meals a day not going over your daily caloric intake. 3 meals a day with a small snack mid morning and mid afternoon should keep your metabolism burning hot all day. How much you eat is as important as what you eat. For example a piece of fish at 250 calories is better for you and is more food than a cookie at 250 calories. Adding more fruit and vegetables to your diet is also good because you can eat more of this than certain other foods. Also drinking water during the day is calorie free and helps with the hungry feeling. Dieting is also about portion control. If you add fruit and vegetables to your plate make it half the plate worth of food and the rest of the plate other lean proteins. A piece of meat about the size of the palm of your hand is a good start. Unless you have huge hands. Also limiting the amount of red meat in favor of fish and poultry is a good idea. Cheating is a huge part of the whole dieting mindset. I think that if you must cheat, if you just can't get the idea of how good that cookie tastes then eat one cookie. I call it cheating small. If you deny yourself this cookie day after day then pretty soon your going to cheat BIG and eat 10 cookies, not a good idea. So cheat small when you must especially for your mental health. Dieting is for your physical health as well as your mental health.

Step 3

Exercise is important to the whole dieting deal. You can lose weight just by watching what you eat and how much you eat but exercise will just increase the weight loss and make you feel better in general. Start with a short walk after you evening meal. As you do it more you will want to go farther and farther. Just walking a mile can, depending on your current weight burn at least 70 calories. The faster you walk the more you burn. Doing cardio exercises and resistance exercises 3 to 4 times a week increases the calories you burn. There is a multitude of good cardio, resistance and weight lifting exercises on the internet. Find the ones you like best.

Anyone who has ever tried to diet will tell you it's not easy. And it's not. Dieting is a personal choice and chances are if you are dieting for anyone but yourself you will fail. There are so many wonderful fattening things to eat out there that sometimes you just can't resist. But if you truly want to lose weight ask youself one question, Am I worth the effort and work it will take to lose weight and if you find yourself answering yes, then just do it. Make the commitment to yourself, you will be amazed what you can do and how you will feel.

Tips & Warnings

When starting any exercise routine take your time and don't overdue it. If you hurt yourself then you can't exercise.
