How to Donate Old Furniture

By Edited Jan 17, 2016 0 0

Furniture comes in many various shapes, sizes and colors. Unfortunately, whether purchased or inherited, a piece of furniture that you once loved may have possibly grown to be an incredible eye-sore that stands out like a sore thumb amongst your new, updated, and modern furniture. Outside of an occasional horrific series of stains, old furniture has actually been known to hold its strength, durability and comfort, which, although you may have outgrown it, may be a welcomed possession to someone else.

By donating your old furniture, although you would essentially be giving your furniture away for free, not only will you make someone else's day, but you can also gain the benefits of a tax break. In many ways, donating old furniture can be a welcomed activity that you can either do on your own, or involve your family.

Things You Will Need

Your Old Furniture
Yellow Pages

Step 1

Your Yellow Pages can be an amazing resource when the time comes to consider donating your furniture. Because the Yellow Pages are essentially a giant telephone directory of businesses, that are categorized by product or services, you can rest assured by utilizing it in the right manner that you will find local charitable organizations that will accept your old used furniture. Regardless of where you live (and, in the city your likelihood of finding one of these organizations will be that much greater), you will find these charitable organizations, that accept old furniture, by looking under the particular categories of "Health Services", "Associations", and/or "Social and Human Services for Individuals and Families".

Step 2

If you do not want to donate your furniture to a charitable organization, it may not hurt to think outside of the box when it comes to this endeavor. Are there any particular people or groups that you know that could benefit from a donated piece of furniture? Whether you are at a party, or a social event, conversation with others can be had regarding what to possibly do with your furniture. Others may know of a particular group of people, whether it a high school/college drama team or a nursing home, that could benefit from this donated furniture. In this case, consider the condition of your donated furniture and how it may/will actually be utilized by the receiving group. A battered piece of furniture may be appropriate and acceptable for one group, while another group may need at least somewhat appealing (albeit old) donated furniture.

Step 3

Non-profit organizations, such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill, are specifically in the 'business' of being able to find a more 'suitable' home for your donated furniture. Contacting them can be a great way to donate your old furniture. In order to help enhance the lives of the underprivileged, you can begin by conducting a Google search and visiting their respective websites for more information.

Step 4

In some cases, it may not be possible for you to delivery your old furniture, to one of these non-profit organizations, yourself. In particular, you may not have a suitable vehicle for transport, or you may actually be unable to move or navigate the furniture by yourself. Calling or getting into contact with your hopeful end destination for your old furniture will allow you to ask whether or not they would be willing to send someone or some people out to actually pick up your old furniture. While on the phone with a group or organization, be sure that you ask pertinent questions, such as the above, and that you make the arrangements necessary. If the agency, organization, or group are to send out people to pick up your old donated furniture, you will want to ensure that you are actually home so that their trip is not wasted, only to find that noone is home with no way to even actually access the furniture.

Step 5

Another reason why you will want to be home when the organization, agency, or group takes possession of your old donated furniture is because you will want to ensure that you receive a receipt. Once you obtain this receipt, you can attached a list, to the receipt, of the itemized list of all the furniture pieces you donated to charity. You will want to list all these items with their fair market value that you will have to determine on your own. The receipt you receive will have to be saved for tax purposes.

There are a variety of groups, agencies, and non-profit organizations that could benefit from a donation, whether large or small, of your old furniture. You may want to donate your furniture for a variety of reasons, however, if the furniture is extremely ragged and unsuitable for use, it may actually be better just to throw it away. In this case, it will help to use your better judgment and attempt to figure out what would be in the better interest of the organization or group that you hope to take receipt of it. Would they appreciate it, or would the furniture be better served for garbage, thus leaving them with an extra item on their hands that they have to get rid of themselves. Do everything you can, and go the extra mile, to at least ensure that your old furniture is as clean as possible prior to donating it.

Tips & Warnings

If you do attempt to transport your old furniture by yourself, be sure that it is secured safely, whether in the trunk of your car or on the flat bed of a pickup truck. Different kinds of old furniture may be sturdy or not so sturdy, and you should really consider the ease by which it could break when you are considering transporting it on your own. The last thing you want to happen is to arrive at the charity, group, agency, or non-profit organization with a battered piece of old furniture, with broken legs, that is completely unusable. This would cause an added burden or strain to be placed on both you as well as the organization that you hope to take receipt of your old furniture. By keeping these things in mind, you can lend easily to a better furniture donation process, and ultimately a happy recipient.
