How to Dress Up in a Costume Like Ron from Harry Potter

Whether you are dressing up like Ron for a Harry Potter party or putting together a costume for Halloween, changing your appearance to look like one of the Harry Potter wizards can be a lot of fun. In fact, the enormous popularity of the Harry Potter books and movies have made Harry Potter look-a-likes even more prevalent than ever. Here are some easy ways to dress up in a costume like Ron from Harry Potter, for very little money using many items that you already have around the house.

• To simulate a black Hogwarts school robe, get a black choir robe. All of the students at Hogwarts, including Ron, Harry and Hermione all wear black robes. Robes can be found at many thrift stores and also at religious bookstores.
• Wear a white, button-down dress shirt and black pants with black shoes. Complement this ensemble with a red and yellow striped tie, which are the Gryffindor colors. If it is cool during the time of year that you are wearing your costume, find a red and yellow striped scarf to wear as well.
• Get a wand. A wizard is never without his or her wand, so you better have one too. Wands are easily made at home by selecting a stick out of the yard and gently sanding down each end to a smooth point. Use some black spray paint to completely cover it and voila, you have a wand. You can even get more creative with a glitter pen or stickers to make the wand more decorative.
• Carry a broom. Brooms are important modes of transportation for wizards, so this is an important part of the wardrobe. The best type of broom to carry is the decorative type as they are more attractive that a standard broom used for sweeping.
• Wear a red wig. Ron's most distinguishing feature is his red hair. So if you already have red hair, then you're all set. If you don't have red hair you're going to need to get a wig if you want to dress up like Ron.
• Carry around a plastic rat. Ron is rarely without his pet rat Scabbers and this is one of the easiest parts of the costume to purchase. Look in toy departments and pretty much anywhere during Halloween for rats.
• Have fun with your costume and feel free to add additional detailing. For example print out the Hogwarts logo and add it to the black robe to make it even more authentic.
