How You Can Eliminate Your Cable Bill

By Edited May 19, 2015 1 0

In these hard economic times, it is now more important than ever to save every penny possible.

If you are anything like me you don’t spend all your time in front of the TV, yet you still like to be able to watch your favorite shows from time to time.

So how can you do this without a cable subscription?

Simple! I will guide you step by step on how I have been able to get by the past 4 years without paying for cable using only my high-speed internet connection.

Fist of Cash

Make Your TV a Smart TV.

Many of the televisions being sold today are already equipped to be smart TVs. But those can be very costly, so here is a more simple solution: Roku. My TV is over 10 years old yet all I had to do was buy the Roku HD, which was under $40, and hook it up to my television with the provided cables.

Subscribe to a Provider

Once you have your “Smart TV” You will have a plethora of options, but almost all of them will have these channels available.

I pay $7.99 a month for my subscription to Netflix. With that I get access to thousands of Movies and TV Shows. This is all I really need to keep me happy. The variety of choices are amazing and I am always finding new additions I wouldn't have expected.

Amazon Prime

I also have a membership to Amazon Prime, which is $79 a year. This might seem like a big chunk of change up front, but it is well worth it in the end. With your membership you get many of the same movies and shows that Netflix offers, plus a few that they don’t. Also, if you shop at Amazon they offer free shipping to their Prime members. Last but definitely not least, you can “Borrow” books from their kindle library for free!

Hulu Plus

At 7.99 a month, the biggest benefit of Hulu Plus over other providers is that they provide the newest episodes of your favorite TV shows much sooner. They, as well as Netflix, also have applications for your smartphone so you can watch on the go!

Plex Media Server

In addition to subscribing to streaming channels, PLEX Media server allows you to take the shows and movies that are saved on your computer and stream them directly to your TV! Best of all, you can use PLEX absolutely free. To use PLEX, simply download the application to your computer and follow the set up instructions. Once downloaded on your computer, load the channel into your Roku, Google TV, LG or Samsung Smart TV. You can find specific instructions for your device on their website.

That's it! Now you  have the benefits of both the TV and high speed internet, Yet only have to pay for the internet itself. I hope this guide has been helpful to you and your pocketbook!
