How to Encourage Website User Engagement

By Edited Oct 29, 2015 0 1

Make Your Site Stick

User engagement is the driving force behind having a successful website. If you are not able to get people to use your website or to want to look at it, then you are not going to be successful in your online venture. There are a number of ways that you can increase the user engagement for your website.

The Content You Create

One of the most important ways to encourage user engagement is through the web content that you create. If your content is not engaging and something that your audience is actually looking for then you will not be able to hold their attention.

There are a number of ways that you can research what you should be creating. There are Google keyword and trend tools that help you see what people are looking for on the search engine. You can then tailor your content to suit what people are actually looking for.

Look at Bounce Rates

When you have a website you need to know about the people who are visiting and how long they stay on the website for. The best way to do this is to use Google Analytics or a similar tool. These tools will track the visitors you have and determine what they are doing on the website.

One of the statistics that you need to look at is the bounce rate. When a visitor bounces this means that they have clicked on the page and the left within seconds. Pages on your website that have a bounce rate of 85% or more should be removed and reconsidered.

Have a Good Headline

When you think about magazines and newspapers you will remember headlines that they have. The headline is what grabs the attention of the reader. You need to ensure that you have headlines and that they are working for you.

The headlines that you have need to be related to what your content is about. There is no point in having a catchy headline if it does not direct the right kind of traffic to your site. The headline is what you will use to draw the reader in so it needs to be focused on what you are doing and what you are going to be telling the reader about.

The Hosting Plan You Have

The hosting plan you have can seriously affect the user engagement that you find with the website. If you do not have good hosting the engagement is going to be low. You need to ensure that you have the right hosting plan for your website.

Most hosting providers will have a range of different plans that you can choose from. You need to use one that will not only cover the website as it stand, but is also future proof. You also need to look at the uptime you will have with the plan and the speed of the website.

If you have low uptime your website is going to be down more than it is live. This will reduce the visitors you have and the user engagement. If the website is not fast then you are going to have a higher bounce rate for all the pages. This is due to the amount of time that it takes for the page to load.

Take Time for Social Media

Social media is something that you cannot get away from. This means that you need to take the time to consider it when you look at user engagement. The three main social media networks that you should focus on are Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+.

Facebook allows you to connect with more users and for people to share your content with others.  LinkedIn allows you to make B2B contacts that will help you expand your business in the future. Google+ offers you another link to Google and could make the search engine a bit happier with your website.

The Use of Incentives

If you are looking to sell something then you should consider the use of incentives. Incentives make people more likely to go onto your site and to potentially buy something. You should consider including the incentive in the SERP snippet that people will see on Google.

When you do this you are going to be standing out from the crowd. You will also be able to draw people in from the search engine results.

Capture Emails

Email capturing is something that all online ventures need to look at. You can capture emails in a number of ways and the most common is through a newsletter or freebie signup. When people give you their email address you will offer them news about the site or something for free.

You can then use all of the emails that you get to widen your customer base and to build up a fan base. When you have loyal subscribers and users you are going to see greater user engagement.

Be Smart Phone Friendly

More and more traffic to websites comes from smart phones. This is due to the increase in the number of people with these phones and the broadband that they are able to get. MiFi mobile broadband is another step in the expansion of mobile broadband and is linking more and more people to the Internet.

If your website is not smart phone friendly then you could have a problem. There are certain websites that are able to get away with having websites that are not optimised for phones. However, as a small venture you need to make sure accessing your website and filling in forms is easy for your users.

Test the Website

You should always test your website to make sure that everything is working. There are also a number of services that will test the site for you and offer you feedback from the customer’s point of view. This allows you to change certain aspects of the site to make it easier for your users. You should also regularly test that all the links on your website still work correctly and take people to the correct pages.
