Unemployment benefits can be filed online or over the phone-there is no way to file for unemployment insurance that puts you face to face with a real person. This can be a little bit unnerving, especially if you've never been on unemployment before and never had to deal with all the technicalities of a layoff.

While filing for unemployment online is faster and easier than calling into the unemployment claim telecenter, it's good to have a but of guidance to know that you are doing things correctly. In attempt to shed a little light on filing an unemployment claim online; here's what you need to do to file for your unemployment insurance over the world wide web.

Get all of the necessary personal information in order. You will need your social security number, address, contact number, and more- depending on your state of residence. Find out what you will need to file so that you will be prepared.

Obtain all of the information about your previous employer. To be able to file for unemployment insurance, you need the name of your employer of dislocation, the wage you earned, and your start and end dates.

Make the case that your being unemployed is due to no fault of your own (that it's due to lack of work). In order to be eligible for unemployment benefits, you must have lost your job because of a true lack of work-fires and quits do not receive unemployment checks.

Wait for your waiting week to pass. When you file for unemployment benefits online (or over the phone) you will have what is called a "waiting week". During this week, you will not receive unemployment checks. Once you have been deemed eligible for unemployment, you will start getting paid on a weekly basis.

Complete the mandatory 3 job searches a week; possibly more if you are on an unemployment extension. You must apply to at least 3 jobs a week to stay eligible for unemployment insurance. Document the job search by noting the date of application, who you spoke to about the job, and the location/address of the job.

It's important to follow these unemployment insurance procedures because you may be called in for an audit, where you will be required to show that you have in fact been abiding by the protocol. If you are audited and are found to have been not completing the job search logs, your unemployment checks will stop and you may have to repay all of that money (along with hefty fines and fees).
