How to Find Local Trucking Jobs
Many people who are looking for Commercial Driving License careers (CDL jobs) are interested in a job that allows them the freedom of the freeway with the luxury of being home every night. Unfortunately, this is not always the way of CDL jobs; many of them take their drives away from their homes and families for weeks at a time. Truck drivers with no experience are in even more of a bind when looking for those local trucking jobs. CDL jobs that take you home every night may be hard to find, but it's definitely not impossible. Here's how to find a local trucking job.
Think outside the typical CDL jobs. Over the road trucking jobs are usually plentiful, while those local, regional trucking jobs are more rare and highly sought after (meaning your competition will likely be tough!). If you want a local CDL job, consider working for the city or county as a dump truck driver.
Dump truck drivers jobs have ideal hours, allow you to go home every night, typically pay well, and come with excellent benefits. These local truck driving jobs are perfect for the family man who likes to drive.
Another option to land CDL truck driving jobs that don't keep you away from home for weeks are ones that have team driving options. Team driving CDL jobs are ones that allow you to cover a certain region, a certain predetermined number of miles with a "teammate" who picks up where your CDL route ends. As long as you don't think that you'll get bored with covering the same few hundred miles, this job could be perfect for someone who's priorities are close to home.
Look for local truck driving jobs with construction companies. Construction companies frequently need a local CDL driver to haul material to and from various worksites. If you can get a truck driving job in one of these outfits, you'll likely have a job description that includes far more than just driving, as you may find yourself being put to work on the construction sites as well.
Another way to find those ideal local trucking jobs is to put in your time as an over-the-road driver (OTR CDL jobs). It may not be your perfect job but as in any career pathway, sometimes you have to put in a little time before you land your dream job. Spend anywhere from 6 months to 2 years in an OTR trucking job and you'll find that your chances of finding a great local trucking job skyrockets.
Local CDL trucking jobs are the ideal job for many people who hold the CDL training and certifications. This is understandable, however, it's important to realize that this means that the competition for this type of CDL job will be tighter. That means that you should adjust your expectations and be willing to take an OTR trucking job, at least when you are new to the profession.
