By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Do you need to know how to get rid of chest congestion? That raspy feeling can be caused by a cold, allergies, or a more serious condition, so if it persists beyond a few days, you should see a doctor. But in the meantime, there are steps you can take if you want to know how to get rid of chest congestion to ease your breathing, and reduce coughing. Both steam and over the counter cold medicine products can help you get rid of bad coughs that are annoying, make sleeping difficult, and cause inflammation in your throat. Follow these steps to learn how to get rid of chest congestion.

Take a hot shower.  The steam will help loosen phlegm in your throat, and sinuses.  As you breathe in the steam, it will also loosen it in your lungs just as decongestants in over the counter cold medicine products do.

Drink hot beverages, such as tea.  The steam from these beverages helps you get rid of chest congestion in the same way as the shower.  Deeply breathe in the steam before each sip.

Create a “steam mask.”  An alternative to over the counter cold medicine is to try microwaving a cup of water for a minute.  Dip a facecloth into the hot liquid.  Test the temperature by placing it beside your hand, and if it feels as though you can stand it, gently touch the wet cloth.  Use caution so you don’t burn yourself as you’re learning how to get rid of chest congestion.  If you need the water to be hotter, microwave for an additional 15 seconds.  If the temperature is bearable, place it over your face and breathe in the steam for about 5 minutes.  Repeat this step if you desire once the cloth has cooled off.

How to Treat Indoor & Seasonal Allergy Symptoms
Try over the counter cold medicine if the steam is not helping.  Look for one that contains a decongestant.  Keep in mind that many decongestants contain a derivative of caffeine, if you already consume a lot of caffeine, cut back on the coffee/soda for the day, or if you are sensitive to caffeine, talk to your doctor about alternatives to how to get rid of chest congestion.  Good luck!
