James Gathany (27699) You probably already know what head lice are, or you wouldn’t be here trying to find out how to get rid of them. If you have ever had to deal with them, then you know that they are a pain in the derriere. Everything seems fine at home and you get a call from school to come and pick up your child because there is a head lice outbreak. And hear we go. Sometimes this can happen at the most inopportune time. Say between paychecks. However, it must be dealt with immediately. So let’s see what you have around the house. Here are some ideas that do work.

  1. Mayonnaise - Apply a generous amount of mayonnaise and coat hair completely. Put on a shower cap and get comfortable. Leave on hair for at least 3 hours to smother louse. When you are done wash hair, rinse, and repeat. Use a nit comb to remove eggs. Repeat in 10 days.
  2. Vaseline - Apply this jelly to hair in generous amount to smother lice. Leave this in overnight. You will need a shower cap to sleep in. You will need Dawn to remove this thick substance out of your hair. It will take several shampoos, but it will be worth it. Use a nit comb to remove eggs. Repeat in 10 days.
  3. Essential Oils - Mix a ¼ cup of olive oil with ¼ cup of coconut oil together and coat hair. Leave on hair for about 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse hair with vinegar. Use a nit comb to remove eggs. Repeat in 10 days.
  4. White Vinegar - Saturate hair with white vinegar. Left on hair for about 45 minutes under a shower cap. Wash hair in Tea Oil or Coconut Shampoo. Use a nit comb to remove eggs. Repeat in about 10 days.
  5. Sargents Flea and Tick Shampoo for Cats Only - Some people swear by this. Shampoo as you regularly would. With any treatment use a nit comb. Repeat in 10 days.
  6. Avon Skin-so-Soft - Spray in hair and leave of about 30 minutes. Comb out nits. Shampoo, rinse and repeat in 10 days.
  7. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Moisturizer- Saturate hair completely and comb out the excess moisturizer. Blow-dry hair until completely dry. Use nit comb. Shampoo hair, rinse and repeat in 10 days.
  8. Listerine or Scope - Mix with vinegar and leave in hair for 1 hour. Use nit comb. Shampoo and Rinse.
  9. Straightening Iron - Use in hair from scalp to the ends. Lice will die.

Other products people swear by are Hydrogen peroxide, Alcohol, Camphor Products, Denorex Shampoo. This all give off a strong scent that lice do not like. Some products like Vaseline and Mayonnaise smother lice. Peppermint and Eucalypts Oils can be used, but not around infants because it may affect their ability to breath. Peppermint oil can also increase blood pressure. Peppermint and Rosemary Oil may be harmful during pregnancy so check with your doctor before using these products. Ulesfia is a Benzyl Alcohol Lotion that is pesticide free, but it must be prescribed by a physician. This is probable why hydrogen peroxide works so well. As with all the other treatments, you will still have to do the proper removal of infestation from hairbrushes and linens.   A new product called Natroba is scheduled to be release in 2011 that is very effective, however, it has to be prescribe by a physician and cannot be used on children four and under.  It can be lethal to infants.  Given that, the list of solutions above will be safe and effective.  If you know of anything that I have missed please leave me a comment.
