How to Get a Copy of My W2 Online

By | 1 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

The W2 form is used to report wages earned from any employer, as well as the accumulative dollar amount of taxes that were withheld from each paycheck. Ideally, an employer should send every employee a copy of his or her W2 tax form before the end of January in any given calendar year.

In the real world, however, there are slip-ups in the fiscal office, and mail often gets lost or stolen.

Fortunately we've got the convenience and comfort of the world wide web, which besides hosting hours of directionless internet browsing, can also help you out with things like finding a W2 online.

Here's what you need to make that happen.

Call the employer to find out if they even have your W2 online.

Not all employers automatically provide an online W2 form, so you need to find out whether or not your last employer does.

In order to get this information, you will want to call either your company's fiscal department, or the Human Resources office. Either one will either be able to give you the helpful information or be able to connect you to the party who will be able to help you out.

Get the name of the company that they go through.

W2 forms online can go through multiple venues; it's a business service, so find out which one it is that your company uses. Also find out if there is any particular information that you will need in order to access this particular account for online W2 information.

Create an online account with that online W2 company.

They will ask for a bit of information about you and likely at least ask for you to create a user name that will be attached to an email and password protected.

Make sure that you attach your online W2 form and account to an email address that works. You also want to make sure that the password you assign to the account is one that you can easily remember, but one that will also protect your sensitive information on your online W2 form.

This feature allows you to get back into your online W2 information at a later date.

Have all of your personal information on-hand and ready; it takes a bit of a security screening to get to your online W2 form.

This may initially seem like a bit of an inconvenience but really they are just protecting you and your secure information. You will likely need at least your social security number, address and date of birth.

Access your W2 online.

Print out a copy of your W2 and consider saving a draft onto your computer for later reference (if it's a secure computer).

If you've attempted to find your W2 online and had no luck, consider talking to your employer about providing the option.

It's much more convenient and even more secure than snail mail delivery of a W2 form.
