How to Get a Great Workout Without Buying Any Equipment or Gym Membership

It's almost impossible to turn on the television today without seeing an advertisement for the latest workout program or the benefits of owning a gym membership.  Despite what many infomercials and health fitness guru's will tell you, you don't need to buy the P90X workout program or have to spend a fortune on a gym membership to get a great workout. 

There are several ways to get the the body and the results that you've always wanted without having to spend a single dime.  Not only are these gym alternatives free, but they're just as good in delivering results as those expensive gym equipments.

Run around your neighborhood or school track

You don't need an expensive treadmill to get a great cardiovascular workout, you can simply run around your neighborhood.  Running outside is great because, as oppose to running on a treadmill, you get to enjoy changes in scenery as you run and you get the added benefit on saving gas money from not having to drive down to the gym. 

You also have the option of using your local high school's track and field.  The great thing about using the school's track is that it's easier to keep track of how many miles you've run.  On a standard track, one time around is equivalent to 0.25 miles; so four times around is one mile.  During football and track season, these facilities might be closed to the public during certain hours but usually become available after the team's practice sessions are finished.  I recommend calling the school to confirm.

Local Swimming Pools

For many people, running is simply too hard on the knees.   They need another activity that can provide a great cardio workout and, at the same time, is less strenous on their knees.  Swimming is a great alternative because not only is it a great total-body workout, but the buoyancy of the water will also  protect your joints from wear and tear.   Swimming improves your endurance, burns fat, and helps strengthen you shoulders and back.

Your school or community pool is a great resource to use because they are usually free of charge and often times there's also exercises classes available for all fitness levels that you can join.  

Stairs

Running or walking stairs is a great way to improve your cardio and strenghten your legs at the same time.  But you don't need  an expensive Stairmaster to get these results, any set of stairs will do the job! 

There's a lot of places where you can use the stairs to get a workout.  If you go to your local high school's track and field you'll notice several people running up and down the bleacher stairs.  At your work, instead of taking the elevator up to your floor, make a commitment to use the stairs instead.  If you have a set of stairs at home, make it a point to walk up and down the stairs as often as possible; in fact, make a game out of it and challenge yourself to do even more each day.

Park Gyms

Park gyms are a great resource for anyone who's looking to get a great workout without having to pay for anything.  Located in parks across the country, these gyms come equipped with many of the same type of equipment that you see in gyms.  There's pull-up bars, sit-up benches, tricep dip stations, and even ellipticals.  Best of all, they're free for anyone to use!
