The App store on iTunes sells well over 200,000 different Apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad. But up until now, you couldn't gift a specific App to someone. In the past, you were only able to give them a gift certificate for a fixed amount of money. Apple has made changes to the App store in iTunes, so now you can give a specific App to a friend or relative. Here's how you go about doing it.
Things You Will NeedA friend or relative with an iPhone, iPodTouch or iPad that you'd like to gift an App to.
Step 1First, go to iTunes on your computer and open the App Store window. Search for and find the App you want to give as a gift. For example, let's say that you would like to give your Grandaughter the Cat In The Hat book App for her iPhone, iPodTouch or iPad. Search for and find the Cat in the Hat book App in the App store. Then, in order to gift the App, you simply click the triangle next to the App's price and choose "Gift This App".
Next, you'll see a form to fill out that includes your name and e-mail, the recipient's name and e-mail, and, if you'd like, a personal message to the recipient. You can either have the gifted App sent by e-mail or print out the gift information yourself, to include in a card or letter.
Also, you can gift the same app to multiple people by entering several e-mail addresses; you'll be billed the purchase price of the app per address. It's as simple as that. I'm glad that the App Store has finally added this long-awaited feature. It means that this year's holiday shopping has just gotten that much easier.
Previously, if you wanted to give an App as a gift, you had to buy an iTunes gift certificate for a fixed amount, usually more than the App itself would cost. This meant that the receiver of your generosity could spend that money on any App, music, video or TV show of his or her choosing, not solely on the App you wanted them to have. All that has changed. Now, if it's The Cat In The Hat Book you want to give them, it is The Cat In The Hat Book they will get.
