How to Grow and Propagate Borage

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Borage is an annual herb that blooms from late spring to midsummer. Bloom time can be extended by dead heading the flowers. Save the flowers and get the seeds for the next year's crop. This garden herb is used in soups, salads, dips and for candied flowers.

Things You Will Need

Borage
Garden gloves
Garden spade
Garden hose
Organic or general purpose fertilizer for edibles

Plant this popular garden herb in full sun to light shade. It should be planted in a location where it is protected from wind. Direct sow and barely cover the seed. It only takes 5 - 8 days for seeds to germinate. Borage plants should be 12 - 20 inches apart. Plant closer together if the Borage is not sheltered from wind.

Plant the herb in rich, well drained soil. Pinch it, as it grows, to encourage branching and prevent it from looking gangly.

Fertilize plants with organic fertilizer or a general purpose fertilizer for edibles often if it is planted in poor soil. Fertilizer high in phosphorous (the middle number) will aid in the amount of blooms and extend bloom time.

Direct sow Borage. It is not recommended to start indoors as the plants grow so rapidly that they become root bound quickly. It will readily self sow or you can wait until the flowers have died and pick the seeds out of them.
