How to Have a Stay-Cation

By | Mar 5, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

A stay-cation is a phenomenon quickly gaining momentum as more people have less money to spend on traveling. Instead of taking time off to go somewhere, why not take time off to stay at home?

Plan your stay-cation well in advance, as though you are planning a trip.

If others will be involved in the stay cation (a significant other, children, et cetra), be sure to include them in the planning process. What will you do? What are your expectations? Are you planning to rest the entire time, or are you planning a big project?

A stay cation is a great time to work on a major home improvement project. For example, you could paint the exterior of your house. Planning a major project during your stay cation can add value to your home while keeping costs low because you will be doing the bulk of the work yourself. The downside to doing a home improvement project during your stay cation is that when you come back to work, you won't feel as rested as you would if you planned on relaxing.

Would you rather relax during your stay cation? Are you able to sleep in? If you have a significant other and children, you could agree to take turns waking up with the children in the mornings so one of you can sleep in while the other is awake. You could rent some movies ahead of time and relax in your living room. You could make some meals ahead of time and freeze them so you do not have to cook during your stay cation. You could also plan to go out for meals once or twice during the stay cation. Remember that typically going out to lunch is cheaper than going out to dinner.

In many ways, planning a stay cation is more flexible than planning a vacation, or a trip. During your stay cation, you could change the plans at any time if you feel like it. If you were taking a trip, it would be a lot more difficult to, say, change your flight reservations. Even though by exact standards, a stay cation means you stay home, you could still travel if you felt like it. You could take a drive though the country side for the afternoon. You could visit nearby relatives or friends. You could take a picnic to the park.

The possibilities for having a stay cation are as unique as the individuals who choose to take them. Where will your stay cation take you?
