How to Hide a Drive in Windows

By Edited May 23, 2016 0 1

Maintaining the security status of confidential data is much of a challenge in this age of wireless connectivity. People share the same network in restaurants, parks, cafe and at work. Even at home the "personal" computers are no more personal as many people use them thus reducing the scope of privacy. You must have read several guides to hide folders and files however that ain't much useful if you haven't got a proper software. Regular passwords can be decrypted by trifle softwares. Hiding a drive is a better and safer option.

Things You Will Need

You won't need anything to achieve your goal, i.e., hide a drive. All you need to do is some registry tweaks. The drive will be as invisible as if it never existed. It won't appear on My Computer, won't run even on command prompt or in safe mode.

Step 1

The first step is create a registry backup as now we will begin with changing it. Once you have created a registry backup, follow these steps.

Step 2

run regedit (38229)
Open 'Regedit'. You can open 'regedit' by clicking on the "Start" button followed by "Run" and typing "regedit". Note: You can also open the run window by pressing the Window key with "R".

Step 3

explorer hive drop-down menu (38230)
Navigate step by step to the following registry- 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion PoliciesExplorer' Right Click on the "explorer" registry click on 'New' and then on 'DWORD' value.

Step 4

DWORD NoDrives Dialog box
Rename the new value in DWORD to NoDrives and then double-click on it to open a new dialog box. Under the Base section mark 'Decimal'. For whichever drive you want to hide type the corresponding value from the following in 'Value data'. A: 1, B: 2, C:4, D: 8, E: 16, F: 32, G: 64, H: 128, I: 256, J: 512, K: 1024, L:2048, M: 4096, N: 8192, O: 16384, P: 32768, Q: 65536, R: 131072, S: 262144, T: 524288, U: 1048576, V: 2097152, W: 4194304, X: 8388608, Y: 16777216, Z: 33554432 and for All drives: 67108863 For example: if you want to hide drive A, type its corresponding value 1 and for Z type 33554432. If you want to hide multiple drives add their values and enter the sum in 'Value data'. For example if you want to hide D and F type 40 (8 + 32).

Step 5

Click on OK. Restart your Computer and your drive will now be invisible and all your data safe. To access these hidden drives or to unhide them change the NoDrive value to '0'.

This will make your data invulnerable. There won't be so much as a proof that the drive you have hidden ever existed. Not until you change the value of NoDrive to '0'.

Tips & Warnings

This tweak won't work for local drive as Windows needs this partition to run. So do not save your secret files on this drive and do not try to hide this drive.
