The SQ3R Technique

The SQ3R technique is a useful method to retain information in your memory once you have read a book or heard a speech or lecture. It can be a great help to those who are trying to study better and it can also be helpful to people in work environments or any other circumstances. The SQ3R provides a way for you to start active reading which is the only thing that can help you gain benefit from what you are reading.

What is the SQ3R Technique for Reading Retention?

The abbreviation SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recall and Review. These are sequential techniques that should be applied when reading a book in order to retain information in your memory. If you want to achieve maximum benefits from reading a course book or any other kind of text, you should employ SQ3R. Here is what SQ3R entails:

o   Survey: The first thing you need to do is to scan the introduction, contents, chapter summaries or chapter introductions. This allows you to have a kind of overview of the text. This kind of survey also gives you a chance to find out what the book is about and whether it will be of any use to you.

o   Question: When you have completed the survey step you need to write down any questions that you may have regarding the text or the topic. Questions of interest to you should be written down as these can become your study goals. Once you know what questions you have your mind will be able to retain the answers from the given text.

o   Read: The next thing you need to do is read the text. If you want you can restrict the reading to useful sections but make sure you understand all the relevant concepts and theories. Make use of the mind map technique (or any other concept mapping) at this stage especially if there is a lot of complex and thick information in the text.

o   Recall: Once you are done reading a section, and you have a mind map, you should try to recall it. Do this several times so you can identify essential processes and core facts. Try to fit information to the actual subject and see what more you may have learned this way.

o   Review: Reviewing the text will help you expand your notes and the information that you already retain from the reading and recalling processes. Read the document again or you can even discuss the text with a friend or colleague. Some people even like to teach it to other people in order to improve reading retention significantly.

This article discusses everything about the Unique SQ3R method to Improve Reading Retention, which stands for Survey, Question, Reading, Recall, and Review. People can greatly benefit from using this technique, especially when reading review materials for examinations.
