How to Keep Good Posture While Working At a Desk
Poor posture can cause some obvious and not so obvious problems. It can cause pain the back and shoulders, breathing problems, lethargy and weakness, and the appearance of a lack of self confidence. Bad posture can be caused by many things including habits developed and reinforced since childhood, weak muscles, being overnight, being pregnant, poor shoes (including high heels) and a lack of flexibility in the muscles.
Good posture is about having your body sit and stand in a way that doesn't place unnecessary strain on the muscles, ligaments and bones. By correcting your posture you can not only feel better but also improve your health. You will prevent muscles strains, pain in the back and neck, and have your body move more efficiently. Furthermore, good posture can make you look more confident and slimmer. There are many ways to develop good posture including exercises, a posture corrective brace, or simply developing better habits.
How to Sit With Proper Posture
Most office workers sit in front of the computer for 8 hours or more a day. This long hours can cause people to slip into bad habits. When sitting at the computer, your shoulders should be back and your spine straight. You legs should be at a 90 degree angle with your neck, spine and heels all in alignment.
Here are some tips to keep this correct posture throughout the day:
1. Use cushions. Adding support to your chair can help you maintain the correct posture. Find out where you slouch and what your "weaknesses" in your posture are. Then take some comfortable but firm cushions and play around with them until you know the best positions are to keep your posture correct.
2. Your bottom should be against the back of the chair. By doing this, it will be harder for you to slouch or lean forward too much. This all helps to keep your spine in alignment.
3. Take breaks. You can't sit with good posture for eight hours straight per day. You will tire and begin to slouch. By taking regular breaks and walking around, you will become refreshed and less likely to slip into bad habits.
4. Use an exercise ball. If all else fails, you can swap your chair for an exercise ball. Such balls can assist you in keeping the correct posture and can actually help prevent pain and stiffness. If back pain is serious problem then you can use a back support brace in addition to the ball.
5. Strengthen you stomach and back muscles. These muscles are extremely important in keeping the right posture and preventing pain and discomfort. You can incorporate exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles into your daily exercise routine.
