How to Know When A Child Is Ready for School

The question of when a child is ready to start school is a difficult one.Even children with high intelligence can have emotional problems if they start school before they were ready.What should a parent do? Many school systems offer screenings to help assess a child's readiness.Parents whose child is enrolled in preschool can talk to the child's preschool teachers.They can judge the child's readiness based on what they have observed.Parents can also talk with their child's pediatrician and look for certain signs.There are somethings you can look for to determine if your child is ready for school.

If they can:

Communicate with Adults

A child must be able to talk to adults other than his or her parents and be understood.

Manage Personal Needs

A child should be able to put on and take off his or her coat and shoes and use the bathroom without help.

Complete A Task

A child should be able to complete a task such as finishing a drawing or putting away supplies.

Listen Attentively

A child should be able to listen attentively toa story and answer questions about it.

Follow Directions and Take Turns

A child must be able to participate in activities and cooperate with classmates.

Be Patient

A child should be willing to wait for a request to be met or to have a question answered.
