How to Live With Dental Braces

By Edited May 11, 2016 1 0

Living with dental braces can really suck. They hurt. They make you feel ugly. They make your oral hygiene routine a nightmare. However, there are many ways to make your time in braces pleasurable, or at least bearable. Braces are a huge pain but also a huge reward when they are taken off to reveal pretty, straight teeth.

It may seem like forever, but realize that you will only have braces for a few months or for a few years. In the grand scheme of life, that is nothing. The time will pass by quickly and when your prison sentence is over, you won’t even think about the agony. Keep yourself busy with work, school, and fun hobbies.

Think about the end result: perfectly straight teeth! When I had my braces, I would watch time-lapse videos of people with braces online and search the Internet for people blogging about their braces journey. It made me feel much better about the railroad tracks in my mouth. I was excited for my transformation. It was fun to look in the mirror every morning to see how much my teeth moved overnight.

Give yourself a nice reward to look forward to, like teeth whitening. Thinking about your future self with pearly white teeth will make you excited about having straight teeth to match. You could also give yourself a different reward – a nice pair of shoes, a smart phone, or a guitar.

Follow your orthodontist’s instructions. You are not an exception to the rule. Certain foods are prohibited for a reason. If you break a part of your braces, it only increases the time of your treatment. And definitely wear your rubber bands. They are super annoying but the more you wear them, the sooner your braces will come off.

Ask your orthodontist for colored rubber bands. Matching your rubber band color to your mood or to an upcoming holiday can bring out the kid in all of us. A bright pink or orange can brighten up anybody’s day. There are also “clear” or ceramic braces available, but those are more expensive than traditional metal braces.

Be kind to your teeth. They are doing all the hard work. Brush them gently and floss with love. You do not want to give yourself more pain. If you truly are frustrated, take your energy out on a basketball or soccer ball. Some days you will only be able to eat soft foods. Don’t fret. Go out and buy some yummy ice cream and mac’n’cheese.

Remember that you are not your braces. You do not look a bad as you think you do. Many people you see with beautiful teeth have had braces. They will not judge you or think that you are ugly. Some people may even be jealous and wish that they could have braces. Enjoy your life with dental braces!
