How to Make Colored Sugar for a Cotton Candy Machine

By Edited Jul 20, 2016 0 0

Cotton candy can be made in many machines with 100 percent cane or beet sugar including regular granulated sugar. In order to make colorful cotton candy like the kind you find at fairs or the circus, you will need to tint the sugar before you add it to the cotton candy machine. This can be done with liquid food coloring which can be purchased at any grocery store.

Tips & Warnings

Do not add excessive amounts of food coloring to the sugar in an attempt to make dark colored cotton candy. Dark colors are not possible to achieve when making cotton candy as and extra food color can make the sugar clump and clog the machine.

Avoid using extra fine sugar as it may contain cornstarch which can clog the cotton candy machine.

Read the directions for your cotton candy machine to determine exactly what type of sugar is recommended by the manufacturer.
